GUWAHATI: In line with the Chief Minister's decision to de-clutter the Assam Secretariat and make it tidy, the process has started for the first time for destroying as many as 79,116 government files which have been found to be obsolete.

According to sources, these files were earmarked as 'D' category for destruction after diligent scrutiny revealed that they have no future relevance. After this process is completed by October 2 next, around 48,338 files which are important would remain either at the Janata Bhawan or the archive. As some of them pertain to the Central Government, they have been placed under 'A' category, the sources informed.

After destruction of the 'D' category files, another two categories of files –'B' (12 years old or more old) and 'C' (five years or more old) – will remain. These consist of 1,47,000 files which will be kept in the newly-constructed Record Room in the Janata Bhawan campus, the sources said.

It may be mentioned that starting October 2 next, there will be no movement of physical (paper) files at the Janata Bhawan and all new files will be in digital mode.

At present, work is underway to install computers at the tables of each employee of the Janata Bhawan for digital handling of official work. Orders have been placed for 1,700 new computers, some of which have been already installed.

Meanwhile, the PWD Department and its selected architects are conducting a survey and preparing a draft plan for beautification of the Janata Bhawan.
