Dibrugarh triple murder case: Police 'neutralise murderer', hand over body to kin

DIBRUGARH: Sanjay Das, who allegedly killed his wife, son and a relative on May 18, was 'neutralized in self-defence' by police at an abandoned office of the Fishery Department under Barbaruah Police Station here. The police also seized his licensed gun with loaded magazine. He was later rushed to AMC&H, where doctors declared him as 'brought dead'.

Briefing media persons at the SP office on Tuesday, ASP Padmanabh Baruah said, "We had surrounded the abandoned building after getting inputs from Barbaruah OC that Sanjay Das had taken shelter in the building after committing the crime."

The police team headed by SP Srijeet T and accompanied by ASP Padmanabh Baruah, Dibrugarh OC and Barbaruah OC, initially persuaded him to surrender with arms.

"But all efforts were in vain as Das started firing at the police," ASP Baruah said, adding that "the police force also lobbed three stun grenades to disorient him. However, the retired SSB jawan, instead of showing any sign of surrender, started firing at the police. The police team retaliated in self-defence and after a brief exchange of fire, the team successfully neutralized Sanjay."

Answering a query, Baruah said the motive behind the killings was yet to be ascertained. "We will certainly dig out the motive behind the three murders once our investigation gets completed," he said.

After post-mortem at AMCH on Tuesday, the body of Sanjay Das was handed over to his family members for the last rites.
