DIBRUGARH: The Chancellor of Dibrugarh University and Governor of Assam, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi has removed the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dibrugarh University, Ranjit Tamuli. The order comes into immediate effect.

The Chancellor had earlier placed Tamuli under suspension on February 11, 2021. The action was taken after a fact-finding committee indicted him of financial irregularities, corruption and misuse of power while serving as the VC of the university. The Chancellor had then handed over the charge of the Vice-Chancellor temporarily to Prof. RNS Yadav of the Department of Life Sciences-cum dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Dibrugarh University. Following his retirement on February 28 this year, the Chancellor appointed Prof. Lila Kanta Nath of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the university as the Vice-Chancellor (in-charge).

An order from the Raj Bhavan on Monday stated, "The Governor in his capacity as the Chancellor of Dibrugarh University (Section 8(1) of the Dibrugarh University Act- 1965), being the appointing authority of Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University (Section 10(1) of the Dibrugarh University Act-1965) and in the exercise of the powers conferred upon him in terms of Section 10(1) of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965 read with Section 18 of the Assam General Clauses Act, 1915, is pleased to remove Prof. Ranjit Tamuli, from the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Dibrugarh University with immediate effect."

The order further mentioned, "After careful examination of the response submitted by Prof. Ranjit Tamuli, Vice-Chancellor (since suspended) in response to the communication No. GSA.12/21/Pt.11/10 dated October 06, 2021, including the revised inquiry report submitted by the high-level inquiry committee, the Chancellor-cum -Governor after meticulous analysis has accepted the findings of the revised inquiry report submitted by the high-level inquiry committee and rejected the submissions made by Prof. Ranjit Tamuli, Vice-Chancellor (since suspended) in his response dated 03.11.2021."

Earlier in February, the fact-finding committee in its report had mentioned that the personal expenses incurred by the VC were without proper procedure. It added that the VC had the habit of incurring expenses for himself during his tenure without following the norms and regulation. The report also mentioned that in matters of development work — especially in terms of infrastructure creation — the VC flouted rules; and in many cases, he would forcefully or in league with a few of his office staff would incur expenses and make payment to vendors. The forensic report forwarded by the fact-finding committee also revealed that prima facie, there was a case of tampering against the VC.
