Digitalize embankment data: Minister Pijush Hazarika

GUWAHATI: Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika has asked the top officers to digitalize information regarding embankments – their years of construction, years or months of repair and present conditions. "It will help the department to work on a priority basis," he said.

The minister had a video conference with divisional and sub-divisional officers of the department today and issued this directive.

The minister also asked departmental engineers to research to ascertain if the construction of sluice gates on embankments at 4-5 km apart at places without human habitation would strengthen the structures.

He said the department would hold workshops in the first week of September this year for the engineers to share their experiences and ideas on floods and flood fighting.

The minister also asked the Chief Engineer to ensure the proper use of new equipment and funds released during floods this year and keep the unused equipment for future floods.

According to departmental sources, the two waves of floods in the state this year breached as many as forty embankments.
