GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (Dir VAC), Assam, recorded its 100th milestone in arrests related to bribery this year after nabbing red-handed two government employees in the act of accepting bribes.

Sleuths of the Dir VAC on Saturday nabbed two government employees in different locations of the state on bribery charges, as alleged by the complainant.

Interestingly, this was the 100th victim caught in trap cases so far this year by Dir VAC in their drive against corruption in the state.

The two government employees caught by the Directorate are Muzammil Haque, Lot Mandal in the office of the Circle Officer, North Lakhimpur Revenue Circle, and Satya Narayan Deka, Lot Mandal in the office of the Circle Officer, Rupahi Revenue Circle in the Nagaon district.

According to available information, Muzammil Haque had demanded Rs. 1,00,000 as a bribe from the complainant for processing a mutation related to a matter involving his father. Later, the Lot Mandal reduced the amount of the bribe to Rs. 50,000. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached this directorate about taking the necessary legal action against Haque.

Accordingly, a trap was laid on Saturday by a team from the Dir VAC in the office of the Circle Officer, North Lakhimpur Revenue Circle in Lakhimpur district. Muzammil Haque was caught red-handed, in the presence of independent witnesses, immediately after he accepted Rs. 2,000 as part of the demanded bribe from the complainant in the office.

In the second case, Satya Narayan Deka was caught red-handed immediately after he accepted Rs. 3,000 as a bribe from the complainant in the office. Deka had demanded Rs. 5,000 as a bribe from the complainant for processing a mutation-related matter. He was caught red-handed, as he accepted Rs 3,000 as part of the bribe money demanded. The tainted bribe money has been recovered from his possession and has been seized accordingly, in the presence of independent witnesses.
