GUWAHATI: State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has dropped a hint that the State government is not in the mood to extend the lockdown period in Kamrup (M).

Talking to the media here on Wednesday, Sarma said, "We've observed three weeks of lockdown in the metropolitan district. Lockdown is not the solution to the problem. If people don't obey lockdown rules, don't follow social-distancing norms and don't wear facemasks, the situation will escalate in Guwahati. Then the likelihood is that around 2,000 cases will be reported daily.

"In the GMCH, there are 250 COVID-19 patients whose conditions are very critical. Since July 4, nine to 10 critical cases are being registered in the hospital daily. We need to be more alert now."

The Minister further said, "I had a video conference with the Deputy Commissioners, doctors and other medical staff and reviewed the situation across the State today. We analysed the threat perception and also the present containment measures."
