ASSAM ACCORD IMPLEMENTATION

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: In a major push to implement various clauses of the historic Assam Accord, the State government and the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) — one of the signatories of the pact — have come forward to frame the detailed road map in this regard.

Talking to The Sentinel, Minister for the 'Implementation of the Assam Accord', Atul Bora said, "The Assam Accord was signed in 1985 after a six-year-long agitation against the unabated infiltration of illegal foreigners from Bangladesh into Assam. However, a few clauses of the Assam Accord are yet to be implemented.

"The present State government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma has the will and the determination to implement the Accord. When there is the will, the way to implement the Accord will be chalked out. Even the Chief Minister held a discussion with the AASU in this regard. After this, the Chief Minister constituted a sub-committee to examine and prepare a framework for implementation of all the clauses of the Assam Accord in general and with special emphasis on Clauses-VI, VII, IX, and X.

"There are five members of the AASU in this eight-member sub-committee and also three State Ministers. The first meeting of the panel has been already held, and the second meeting is slated soon."

Minister Bora added, "Following consensus between us, the State government will ensure that all the clauses are implemented at the earliest. We are quite positive that the critical issues will be sorted across the discussion table."

Mentionably, the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) is the nodal Ministry for the implementation of the Assam Accord.

Hence, Minister Bora pointed out, "The Assam government will seek help from the Union government on some critical issues of the Accord. I'm quite confident that the sub-committee will prepare the roadmap.

Significantly, this is the first sub-committee to prepare a blueprint for the implementation of all the clauses of the Assam Accord.
