GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will initiate the delimitation exercise of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in Assam from March 26, 2023.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel will arrive in Guwahati on March 26 for a public hearing. The ECI team will be in Assam from March 26 to March 28. During this period they will meet all Deputy Commissioners, representatives of political parties, members of the public, civil society and various organizations to gather first-hand information and inputs regarding the ongoing process of delimitation in Assam.

On March 27, between 9 am to 12 pm, the ECI team will interact with representatives of political parties, public representatives, civil societies and social organizations. Those willing to meet the ECI team may communicate their willingness and submit their representations, if any, to be placed before the ECI, to the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam.

The Election Commission of India has been asked by the Ministry of Law & Justice to conduct the delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies in Assam. Under the provisions of Delimitation Act, 1972, the last delimitation of constituencies in Assam was done on the basis of census figures, 1971 by the then Delimitation Commission in 1976.
