LAKHIMPUR: Encroachers from Arunachal Pradesh fired at Assam forest officials, who prevented the former from felling trees on Tuesday.

According to reports, Rampur Beat Officer Banamali Narah heard the sound of felling trees. The miscreants used hand-operated machines in the Jutuli Bagan area under the reserve forest. He got information that some encroachers from Arunachal Pradesh were cutting trees at Jutuli Bagan.

The beat officer came to his office and set out for Jutuli Bagan, accompanied by forest guards. When they reached the spot, the miscreants fired at them. The forest officials retaliated with the firing. However, there was no casualty during the incident. The miscreants left the place.

Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) PJ Vijaykar, Tezpur Conservator (North Assam), Bonkim Sarmah and Lakhimpur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Ashok Dev Choudhuri arrived at the spot with a team of police personnel. Later they held talks with the Arunachal Pradesh administration regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, the beat officer filed a case in this connection at Silonibari Police Outpost.
