GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had a virtual meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia today and requested the latter to increase the flight frequency and air connectivity in Assam.

The Chief Minister pitched for augmenting the infrastructure and expansion of airports of Guwahati, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Silchar.

Holding the meeting with the Union minister at Koinadhora today, Chief Minister Sarma requested Scindia to build a heliport at Haflong the land. He said that the State Government would hand over land for it to the Ministry.

The heliport in Haflong will be in line with other heliports at Nagaon and Galecki. The modalities for the heliports got finalized, and the construction work will start shortly. Moreover, as a part of the commitment of the State government for the fast development of Karbi Anglong, Chief Minister Sarma also requested the Union minister for a Greenfield airport in Karbi Anglong. He said that a strip of land measuring more than 3000 acres is available for the proposed airport.

The Chief Minister also requested the Union Minister for his help in starting flight operations under the UDAN scheme from Assam to other countries. The Assam government will send a report on the passenger catchment area for the Civil Aviation Ministry to start flight operations to other countries, a press release said.
