Fair price shop dealers’ stir banned in Assam

GUWAHATI: Taking public interest in mind, the State Government has prohibited strikes by fair price shop dealers. The ban has come at a time when such dealers have made public their plans to stage strikes in support of their various demands.

In an order, the Home and Political Department of the State Government said that ‘fair price shop dealers have been playing a crucial role in the distribution of public distribution system (PDS) commodities to consumers under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries’.

The order said that ‘for a period of six months from the date of issue of this notification until further orders, the dealers, suppliers, distributors, workmen, carriers, contractors, and drivers involved in the service of the public distribution system fall under the purview of the Essential Services Category under the Essential Services Maintenance (Assam) Act, 1980. Under this Act, the prohibitory order has been imposed.”
