Fani Fallout: 1 Missing, Many Houses Damaged In Assam

GUWAHATI: Even as the cyclonic storm Fani is not that strong in Assam, the water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still on the rise with the catchment and upstream areas witnessing heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, ferry services remained suspended in both the Brahmaputra and the Barak.

After Doomdooma, Goalpara district is affected by floods following the cyclonic storm. According to a report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 210 people have been affected across the State. Storm and strong winds have damaged houses and uprooted trees at Lala and Katlicherra in Hailakandi district.

There are also reports of floods in Goalpara district as dykes were damaged at Matia and Rongjuli. A bridge (connecting Dudhnoi to Pancharatna via Goalpara) was also washed away in the Matia revenue circle.

There are also reports of a person identified as Naba Kalita missing from Pub Mazhirgaon near Guwahati. The person, along with four other companions, had gone to Rani Chapori for tiling land. However, while returning on Saturday evening, their boat overturned. While his companions swam to the shores, he could not. Till filing of this report, SDRF and NDRF personnel were searching for the missing person.

A bridge over the Kulsi river was also washed away in Palashbari constituency near Guwahati.
