GUWAHATI: The attack on the institutions of xatras by people belonging to a specific religious group in Assam is no longer news. What makes news is that the lands of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev’s father, Late Kusumbhar Bhuyan, in the Morigaon district (formerly Nagaon district) have structures of the specific religious group.

It has come to light during the recent visit of a team from the ‘Assam State Commission for Review and Assessment of Problems of Satralands in Assam’ to Nagaon and Morigaon districts. Satra Commission’s chairman, MLA Pradip Hazarika, led the team to the visit. According to sources, Srimanta Sankardev’s father, Late Kusumbhar Bhuyan, had lands at Bhehguri village under Silpukhuri mouza in Morigoan LAC (Legislative Assembly Constituency) in the present Morigaon district in two different daags, 235 and 236. The four-katha and two-lessa plot under Daag No. 235 has a burial ground on it. The government land records show the plot as government land with the remark “Kabarstan” written later in the remark column.

Daag No. 236 has a plot of two kathas and 16 lessas. The government records show the plot as government land without any writing in the column for remarks. The plot has a mosque erected on it.

Satra Commission Chairman Pradip Hazarika, local MLA Ramakanta Deori, officials of the Satra Commission, and the Morigaon district administration saw the plots. The Satra Commission interacted with the local populace and collected the land records of the two plots, as well as photographs of the plots and the structures erected on them.

The Satra Commission has already submitted its interim report on xatra lands and their encroachment in the state to the Chief Minister.

The State Government formed the Satra Commission to assess the landed property of xatras and their encroachment. Besides MLA Pradip Hazarika as the chairman, the Commission has MLA Mrinal Saikia and MLA Rupak Sarma as members. The term of the commission was one year. However, the Government has extended its term for another year to submit the final report.
