GUWAHATI: The PAB (Project Approval Board) of the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Ministry of Education has asked the SSA (Samagra Shiksha, Assam) to fill up the academic vacancies in the teacher education institutes of the state.

Assam has SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training), DIET (District Institute of Education and Training), and BIET (Block Institute of Education and Training) for imparting training to teachers.

In its recent meeting with the SSA, it came to the attention of the PAB that several academic positions have been vacant for years in the teachers’ training institutes in the state. The vacancy of academic positions in 23 functional DIETS is 34.26 percent, with 378 faculties in positions as against a total sanctioned post of 575. These vacant posts need to be filled on a priority basis, the PAB said.

The vacancy rate for academic positions in SCERT is 66.67 percent, with only five faculties in position against the 45 sanctioned academic posts. These vacant posts need to be filled on a priority basis, the PAB said.

The number of vacancies in academic positions in one functional BIET in the state is 12.5 percent, with seven faculties in positions as against the total recommended strength of eight. The PAB said that the vacancies should be filled on a priority basis.

The SSA replied that the appointment process for 16 posts of lecturers is underway in the APSC, and the draft advertisement for 19 posts of assistant directors has been submitted to the State Government for publication. This apart, the advertisement for 65 posts of lecturers has been published, besides the submission of a draft advertisement for 60 posts of lecturers in DIET to the government for publication through the APSC.

The NEP-2020 prioritizes quality education, and if the institutions imparting training to teachers lack adequate manpower, the education system in the state is bound to suffer.
