Final NRC littered with errors: All Assam Students' Union

 Students' body demands reexamination

GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) reiterated its demand for reexamination of the NRC (National Register of Citizens) on Tuesday when the publication of the final NRC completed two years.

The final NRC got published on August 31, 2019. As many as 3,30,27,661 people applied for the inclusion of their names in the NRC. The NRC authority found 3,11,21,004 applicants eligible and 19,06,657 ineligible for inclusion in the citizenship register.

Talking to The Sentinel, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said, "Initially, the NRC update exercise was very smooth under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India. However, due to lapses on the part of the government, the final NRC is littered with errors. The final NRC has not included the names of many indigenous people. On the contrary, it has many foreigners.

"The onus of giving an error-free NRC was on the State Government, the State NRC Coordinator and the Central Government, but they failed. They should rectify the errors following the Supreme Court's guidelines.

"The final NRC had names of OI (Original Inhabitant) category people. They got the direct inclusion of their names in the citizenship register. We demand a reexamination of the entries in the NRC barring that of the OI category people. We did move the apex court with a petition demanding a fresh examination of the entries in the NRC.

"Later, there were also allegations of anomalies in the entry of names belonging to the OI category in some areas. That prompted us to file another petition in the apex court to reexamine the entries under the OI category if there are any anomalies.

"Our petition in the Supreme Court has not yet come up for hearing due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Only emergency cases come up for hearing now. We will pursue the case when it comes up for hearing. We have all along been demanding a correct NRC."
