Flood situation critical in Assam

GUWAHATI: The flood situation is critical in Assam due to the incessant rains. The damage to roads, bridges and embankments affected the day-to-day activities in the state. Guwahati is also under the grip of floods.

Four people, including two siblings in the Goalpara district, lost their lives in floods and landslides on Thursday. Floods and landslides affected 10.51 lakh people in 1,510 villages in 24 districts in the state. The state administration set up 179 relief camps.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) did sound red alert in Assam and some of its neighbouring states till June 18. While some district administrations closed government and private educational institutions on June 17, some closed schools and colleges on June 17 and 18.

The State Health Department also deferred its interview for fourth-grade posts scheduled for June 19. The department will interview the candidates on July 3.

This wave of floods and landslides has affected the Dima Hasao district again. The NF Railway did clean the New Haflong Railway Station after the last wave of floods had lashed it. However, this wave of floods also inundated the railway track in the hill district.

Flood waters breached the Salbari-Manas National Park road today, snapping the road communication to 30 villages in the area.

In the Darrang district, the Saktola river wreaked havoc today, inundating many villages. The NH-15 remained closed for vehicular traffic from Piporadokan to Saktola bridge in the district.

The Mora Pagladia river in the Bajali district also inundated many villages. The flood waters also affected the Kampur-Karbi Anglong road.
