GUWAHATI: The State Government has instructed the construction company of the six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra between Guwahati and North Guwahati not to allow any of its workers to work without putting on lifejackets. The government said it would not allow anyone to board the boats engaged in the construction work.
On behalf of the State Government, its Public Works Department (PWD) instructed the construction company – SP Singla Constructions Pvt Ltd – to engage in the construction of the bridge.
PWD issued the instruction after the recent tragic death of a labourer without putting on a lifejacket died after falling into the river from the boat. The incident occurred on October 11, and rescuers recovered his body on October 13.
PWD has also sought a report from the construction company about why the labourer died. PWD sources said that the construction company would have to follow all safety measures, let alone lifejacket.
The first six-lane high-tech bridge over the Brahmaputra, connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati, is over 62 per cent complete. The bridge is constructed under the 'Assam Bridge Project of the state's Public Works Department (PWD) by SP Singla Constructions Pvt Ltd of Haryana in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode. The total cost of the bridge is Rs 2,608.68 crore. The funding agency is New Development Bank (NDB).
