GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has asked Vice-Chancellors and Principals to prepare themselves to start the new academic year (2021-22) from October 1.
The instruction has come after the University Grant Commission (UGC) issued the examination guidelines and academic calendar for the new session of 2021-22 adhering to the Covid-19 protocols. As per the notice, the first-year classes in universities and colleges will begin on October 1.
"During a recent meeting with Vice Chancellors of State Universities Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asked the former to explore various innovative ways to start academic activities. The Chief Minister said the education sector has been hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic," an official in the Education department said.
The official said the UGC has directed all the universities and colleges to complete the admission process for undergraduate and postgraduate courses by September 30. The classes for the first semester will begin on or before October 1. The last date to fill the vacant seats is October 31.
"Colleges have been asked to ensure that the admission process for undergraduate courses/programmes for the academic session 2021-2022 commences only after the declaration of results by the CBSE, ICSE, and state boards," the official said.
"Higher Education Institutions may plan for classes, breaks, the conduct of examinations, semester breaks, etc., during the period from October 1, 2021, to July 31, 2022, following necessary protocols/guidelines/directions/advisories issued by the Central/State Governments and competent authorities from time to time, given the COVID-19 pandemic," the UGC stated in its guidelines.
