Food for Thought

Bringing private schools under government regulations is one of the most talked-about issues in Assam. The issue was discussed in the State Assembly many a time with assurances from the government that it would bring the private educational institutions in the State under government regulations so as to prevent them from doing anything at their own whims and fancies. However, as of now the State government has done precious little to discipline the private educational institutions that make guardians of students pay through their noses. This being the beginning of the academic session, of late it has come to light that most of the private schools in the State have been charging amounts ranging from Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000 per student as renewal fees. How justified is this – both legally and ethically? And this is happening at a time when the government is moving towards free of cost compulsory education for all. Isn’t it something that all stakeholders in society need to ponder over?

Does the Assam Non-Government Educational Institutions (Regulation and Management Act, 2018 have enough teeth to tackle all such issues?
