Corruption in Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court has directed the Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam to constitute a committee of senior officers to look into the allegation – corruption in the Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Assam.

The division bench comprises Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak.

The bench directed the Chief Secretary (respondent No. 2 in the PIL) to dispose of the PIL (50/2021), following the law, after giving an opportunity of hearing to the petitioner – Amguri Naba Nirman Samity, Amguri, Sivasagar – by passing a speaking order. The bench further directed the Chief Secretary to take care while constituting the committee that he (Chief Secretary) should not make any officer from the Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes a member of the committee.

The bench said that since the respondents can verify several documents (RTI information) annexed to the writ petition, the Court disposed of the PIL without calling for a counter affidavit with this direction to Chief Secretary.
