GUWAHATI: Union Minister and former Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

The RO (Returning Officer) of the RS polls, Dulal Pegu handed over the winning certificate to Sonowal at the Assam Assembly Secretariat on Monday afternoon. Only Sonowal had filed the nomination papers (as a candidate from the ruling (BJP-AGP-UPPL coalition) for the seat.

After receiving the winning certificate from the RO in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, some State Ministers and Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, Sonowal told media persons, "With the blessings of the people of Assam, I have been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modiji, Home Minister Amit Shahji, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president J.P.Naddaji and BJP leader B L. Santhoshji for giving me the opportunity to further serve the State and the nation.

"I also express my gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP Assam Pradesh president Bhabesh Kalita and all members from both the Ruling and Opposition parties of the Assam Legislative Assembly for their support and good wishes."

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "Honourable Union Cabinet Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Dangoriya gets elected to the Rajya Sabha uncontested. My heartiest congratulations."
