Fully implement Assam Accord, demands AASU

GUWAHATI, Aug 12: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Friday slammed both the Central and State Governments for non-implementing several important clauses of the Assam Accord, which will complete 31 years on August 15 since it was signed.  AASU president Dipanka Kumar th said the problem of illegal infiltration from across the border is yet to be solved by the Government. “Due to continuous infiltration from across the border, identity of indigenous population in the State has come under grave threat and these people are losing their supremacy in their own land,” said th, adding, “it’s really unfortute that some of the clauses of the historic Accord have not yet been implemented.”  He said the solution to illegal foreigners’ problem and their deportation are some of the main demands made in the Assam Accord, which are yet to be solved by the Government.  The AASU also expressed its serious concern over the presence of mes of suspected citizens in the voters’ list and non-sealing of the Indo-Bangla border in the Assam sector. “Given the slow pace of work, it now seems impossible for the Government to seal the Indo-Bangla border in Assam sector by 2016 as promised by Home Minister Rajth Singh,” added th.  AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjee said, “Political parties must make their stand clear on whether they are on the side of indigenous people or illegal Bangladeshi tiols.”  On August 14, the AASU will organise a statewide programme to remember the sacrifices made by people during the days of the Assam Agitation.
