Gaon burah among nine held in insurance scam by Crime Branch, Guwahati Police

GUWAHATI: A total of nine persons have been arrested so far in the insurance scam that came to light recently. There is a gaon burah among those arrested.

The Crime Branch, Guwahati Police, conducted raids in various parts of the city, Nalbari and Barpeta districts. According to police sources, the racket gathered documents like Aadhaar cards, PAN cards etc., of deceased persons in remote and interior villages. They then forged the documents to open bank accounts in the names of people who are not alive. Their next step was to start insurance policies in the names of these persons.

The gang paid a few premiums on the insurance policies to avoid suspicion. Some months later, they produced death certificates of the persons in whose names the insurance policies had been opened and then claimed the insurance money (sum assured). In this way, the gang had withdrawn a lot of money fraudulently.

The arrested gaon burah is Jutika Das of Rani, No. 3 Lat. The other eight arrested are Dhiraj Das of Bhangagarh, Guwahati; Latifur Rahman of Barpeta; Mintu Ali of Barpeta; Baharul Islam of Barpeta, Rokibul Sikdar of Barpeta, Abzarul Rahman of Barpeta; Gofur Ali of Barpeta; and Mridul Haque of Krishna Nagar, Guwahati.

The Crime Branch registered a case (10/2022). Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mrinal Talukdar said that a probe was on. It is likely that more people are involved in this insurance scam.
