GUWAHATI: At long last, the issue of grade pay for trained graduate teachers of primary schools has landed in the Gauhati High Court. The High Court has issued a notice to the state government to respond to it within four weeks.
The Seventh Pay Commission fixed the grade pay for trained graduate teachers in primary schools at Rs 8,700 per month. However, the government refused to pay the trained graduate teachers the grade pay (Rs 8,700 per month) as per the recommendation of the Seventh Pay Commission and sent the issue to the Anomaly Committee to decide. The teachers then moved a petition to the Gauhati High Court, seeking justice. And the High Court ordered the state government to pay the grade pay to the teachers as recommended by the Seventh Pay Commission. This led the state government to file a petition with the court for a review of its order. In the meantime, the anomaly committee fixed the grade pay of the trained graduate teachers of primary schools at Rs 7,400 per month after the graduate teachers had drawn their salaries for 17 months. Since then, the aggrieved teachers have had discussions on the issue with higher-ups in the department and the government from time to time. The teachers also resorted to agitations seeking justice.
Of late, the Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association (ASPTA) filed a writ petition (5599/2023) afresh in the Gauhati High Court seeking justice.
