GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court wants the State Government to take some tangible measures for the safety and security of doctors. The High Court has also asked Dispur to inform it (HC) by November 23, 2021, what measures it will take towards that end.

Senior advocate Sneha Kalita did file a PIL (33/2021) in the High Court after Dr Seuj Senapati had come under attack at a hospital in Hojai in June this year when the Covid-19 was at its peak.

Hearing the PIL earlier, the High Court asked the State Government to inform the court of the measures it has taken for the safety and security of doctors.

During the hearing of the PIL on Wednesday last, Dispur informed the High Court of the measures it had taken for the safety and security of doctors.

However, the measures taken by the State Government failed to impress upon the petitioner. The petitioner feels that the measures taken by the State Government are general, not doctor-specific. He wants some special measures for doctors.

The petitioner says that under the Assam Victim Compensation Scheme 2012, victims or next of kin of victims of acid attack, lynching, mob violence, witch-hunting, sexual assault etc., get compensation. The petitioner appealed to the High Court that the government should make a similar scheme 'with compensation and social security of doctors and other frontline healthcare workers' who get exposed to risk while discharging their duty.

The bench of Justice Kotiswar Singh and Justice Manish Choudhury said that the government might examine this aspect and file their response before November 23, 2021. "We expect that the Government would come up with certain concrete proposals in this regard when we assemble next," the bench said.

In June this year, Dr Seuj Senapati came under attack from the attendants of a Covid-19 patient in a hospital in Hojai. The police have already submitted the charge sheet in that case against 36 accused.
