Guwahati, May 24: A GMDA official was today caught red-handed by anti-corruption sleuths while taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 to issue a building permission.

Assistant Executive Engineer Pradeep Barman had allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from one Mirul Islam who had sought building permission for his ground-plus-two apartment. “I had applied for permission on February 26. One and half months later, I was given an objection letter. Then I approached the building permission cell. Pradeep Barman, who is from the cell, said I will have to pay Rs 50,000 which will be shared among various officers,” Islam said.

“I asked if the amount could be negotiated. He agreed to cut it down. I meanwhile contacted the anti-corruption branch which filly laid a trap today,” he said.
