Golaghat Engineering College: AICTE Rejects Recognition Plea

GOLAGHAT: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has rejected the plea for recognition of the Golaghat Engineering College (GEC). Due to alleged ignorance of the government as well as the Education department of Assam, the GEC has not got AICTE’s approval of recognition. As a result, as many as 92 students are facing an uncertain future.

As per reports, a delegation of experts inspected the college on March 4, 2019. After that the college was denied recognition in an official letter issued on April 30, 2019, for not submitting verified documents. Notably, the college was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in February, 2019 before the Parliamentary election.

The college, built at a cost of Rs. 46.68 crore on a sprawling 110 bigha land, has Civil, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering branches in its curriculum. The college has an intake capacity of 180 students. The college started its academic activities in 2018 with 92 students.

In a final letter of rejection addressed to the Department of Higher Education (Technical), Government of Assam, altogether 17 detailed reasons were listed. Some of the reasons are non-submission of vital documents and other information.

It has been also mentioned that “one batch each of Civil, Mechanical and Chemical, Engineering branches were admitted in the 2018-19 session without the approval of AICTE; Sociology subject for one-and-half year is taken by a teacher of another specialization; there is no feedback mechanism for students and teachers and infrastructure facilities were not satisfactory.”

In this regard, students of the GEC said that the government did not pay interest in due time for approval of recognition of the college. “Like other students we also got admission after qualifying the CEE exam. They said that GEC would get AICTE approval very soon. But after one year we are facing this situation where our future seems dark and uncertain. We have appealed to the government to take initiative for recognition of the college,” said one of the GEC students.

After the denial of recognition to the college, Golaghat AASU, along with other organizations of Golaghat, expressed strong reaction and criticized the Education Department for its lackadaisical attitude towards the future of the students. They demanded the government to take immediate initiatives for running the college.

On Wednesday, the Golaghat AASU submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat with several demands. The Golaghat AASU demanded that for the security of students’ future, the government should take immediate steps for AICTE approval, appoint permanent principal, teachers and other faculties and also develop the infrastructure of the college very soon. Besides, the Golaghat AASU has called a two-hour sit-in on Thursday over the issue.
