GUWAHATI: The Assam Government will train 700 MBBS final-year students and 2000 final-year students of nursing to strengthen the pool of doctors and nurses currently engaged in the battle against novel coronavirus in the State. The government will also train 300 youths to work as paramedical staffs for the same purpose.

Health & Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that even though Assam has not yet recorded a single case of COVID-19 positive case, his department has made all possible arrangements to deal with the situation that might arise due to outbreak of coronavirus in the State. He added that the proposed temporary makeshift camp with attached toilets and bathrooms at the Sarusajai Athletic Stadium to quarantine 1000 persons will be erected within the next seven days.

Sarma further stated that about 700 persons who had recently visited different parts of the country are currently stranded at Srirampur and Boxirhat. These people will be first shifted to Sarusajai Stadium. Similar quarantine facility for 1000 persons will be created at the Nehru Stadium.

The Minister, who has been visiting different medical colleges in the State to take stock of steps taken on the ground to tackle the coronavirus outbreak, also said that it is high time to set up medical college in each and every district. Appreciating doctors, nurses and paramedics for their dedicated service, Sarma vowed to file criminal cases against some landlords who had asked a few doctors and nurses to vacate their rented accommodation fearing coronavirus infection.
