Guwahati: The Government of India (GoI) has proposed five new ropeway projects in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, and a decision has been taken to prepare the detailed project reports (DPR) for the proposed ropeway projects under the Parvatmala Pariyojana. Of the five projects, the most ambitious is the one from Khanapara to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati.

The GoI has entrusted the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) to implement projects under the Parvatmala Pariyojana across the country.

NHLML has now issued a Notice Inviting Tender (NIT), seeking proposals from eligible consultants for the preparation of the DPRs for the development of ropeway projects in Assam and Arunachal.

The proposed ropeway projects in Assam are (i) Ganganagar Part-VII to Bhuban Pahar Mahadev Temple, Cachar, with a proposed length of 2.78 km; (ii) Jatinga Bird Watching Tower – Hempeupet Peak in Dima Hasao district, of 3.50 km length; (iii) Agnigarh Pahar to Bhairabi Mandir in Sonitpur district, of 1.80 km length; and (iv) Khanapara to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, in Kamrup (M) district, with a proposed length of 24 km.

The lone proposed ropeway project in Arunachal Pradesh will be set up at Parushram with a proposed length of 1.85 km.

Earlier, the NHLML had invited bids for the development, operation and maintenance of a ropeway between Kamakhya Railway Station and near Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, with a length of 1.43 km.

National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a wholly owned company of NHAI and a statutory authority under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), has been assigned the work for the development of ropeway projects under Parvatmala Pariyojana in the entire country.

It is worth mentioning that the longest river passenger ropeway of 1,820 m length is the one in Guwahati, which spans across the River Brahmaputra, connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati. One terminal is located at Panbazar, Guwahati, in front of Nehru Park, and the other at Rajadwar village, behind Dolgovinda Temple on the north bank of the Brahmaputra.
