GUWAHATI: The State Government will erect 20 border outposts (BOPs) along its interstate boundary for peace and protection for its fringe dwellers.

This is part of the decision taken by the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to erect 50 BOPs in phases.

According to sources in the Border Protection and Development Department (BPDD), the department will erect 50 BOPs in three phases and 20 in the first phase. The department has entrusted PWD to construct the 20 BOPs of phase I. Cachar district alone will have 11 of the 20 BOPs in phase I. Two each of the remaining nine BOPs will be in Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, and Jorhat, and one each in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Karimganj.

According to sources in the department, the BOPs will be at Dholaikhal, Paglacherra, Ratacherra Camp, Bandarkhal Camp, Karkat Basti Camp, Gombai Basti Camp, Kulicherra Camp, Rengti Hill Camp, French Nagar Camp, Lailapur Camp, and Joydanpur Camp in the Cachar district; Dukurdisha and Rongapahar Tilla Basti (Dhansiri) in the Karbi Anglong district; Jankhana (near Dessoi Reserve Forest) and Boholting (near No 2 Chutiakari) in the Jorhat district; Ougurijan in the Sivasagar district; Abhoyapuri Reserve Forest in the Charaideo district; and Sonapur and Nivang in the Dima Hasao district.

Despite efforts on the part of the State Government to resolve border disputes, untoward incidents do take place along interstate borders from time to time.
