GUWAHATI: Gyanendra Pratap (GP) Singh, IPS, currently serving as Assam's Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) and in-charge Special DGP (Border), will take over as the next DGP of the state with effect from February 1 after Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta attains superannuation on January 31.

The Home and Political Department issued a Notification to this effect on Saturday.

GP Singh is an IPS officer of the 1991 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He had returned to Assam as Additional DGP (Law and Order) in December, 2019 during the height of the anti-CAA agitation. Before returning to Assam, GP Singh was serving as an IGP in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in New Delhi.

After announcement of his promotion as the next DGP, Singh said in a tweet, "We will work to maintain the momentum the state has gained in the last couple of years. With the blessings of Maa Kamakhya, I look forward to the opportunity of serving the people of Assam. Gratitude to the Chief Minister of Assam for reposing trust in me to lead the glorious Assam Police".
