Guwahati: Dense fog across Assam affected surface and air communication on Friday, leading to the cancellation of 16 flights at LGBI Airport in Guwahati. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has even issued a warning today of dense fog that is likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for the next few days.

Denizens of Guwahati have been experiencing foggy nights and mornings in the past two days or so. Foggy conditions persisted until around 11 am on Friday. Flights to and from LGBI Airport in Guwahati were affected in the morning hours, with a few flights delayed and cancelled. A ferry, with passengers onboard, traversing the Brahmaputra River in the Dhubri district, remained stranded in the middle of the river throughout last night due to dense fog hampering navigation.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in North Lakhimpur remained less than normal, with the town recording 5.6 degrees Celsius in the wee hours of Friday. This was a departure of minus 3.1 degrees below normal at this time of the year. Some other towns in the state recording low minimum temperatures were Jorhat with 9.5 degrees Celsius, Dibrugarh 10.2 degrees, Lumding 11.4 degrees, Nagaon 11.5 degrees, Goalpara 11.6 degrees, Tezpur 11.8 degrees, Golaghat and Guwahati 13 degrees each, and Dudhnoi recording a minimum of 13.2 degrees Celsius.

IMD issued a warning of dense fog likely to occur at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until January 5.

On the disruption of flights, an official statement from LGBIA said, “Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA), Guwahati, witnessed inclement weather conditions due to fog on January 3, 2025. Due to this, 16 flights were cancelled and 30 were delayed. LGBIA has deployed airport personnel across the terminal to support passengers and provide them with necessary assistance. As part of our commitment to passenger safety and comfort, LGBIA has also made provisions for additional seating and water for passengers. We request passengers to connect with their respective airlines and check the schedule before arrival at the airport. The safety and well-being of our passengers, employees, and partners remains our top priority.”
