Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has urged the starting of peace talks between the ULFA-I and the Government of India. AASU also appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take initiative to create a conducive atmosphere for the talks. The AASU’s statement came on the heels of the reported attack on the ULFA-I camp in Myanmar.
On Tuesday, AASU president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukon issued a joint statement expressing concern over the recent attack on the ULFA-I camp in Myanmar. They said, “The objectives of AASU and ULFA-I are different, but the death of Assamese youth has appalled us, and we express our condolences to the family members of the deceased. We appeal to both the ULFA-I and the government to create a conducive atmosphere for peace talks, as people of the state want peace. The attack might hamper the peace talks. We request the central government to initiate the peace talks with ULFA-I.”
Meanwhile, AASU chief adviser Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharjya posted on his X handle, “The attack on the ULFA (Independent) camp in Myanmar has deeply concerned us. Though our goals and methods are not the same as ULFA’s, we are saddened by the death of Assamese youths and express our condolences. The people of Assam desire peace. The government must expedite the dialogue process with ULFA (Independent) through consistent efforts.”
