Guwahati: In a bid to address the flood and erosion challenges in the state, the Brahmaputra Board and Survey of India on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in survey activities and geospatial capacity building across the Brahmaputra and Barak river basins. The MoU, which will remain in force for a period of 5 years, aims to support integrated flood and erosion management, drainage improvement, and infrastructure planning through the use of advanced survey technologies and data-sharing mechanisms.

According to sources, the agreement was signed by Abhay Kumar, General Manager of Brahmaputra Board, and Dr Mohan Kumar Stalin, Additional Surveyor General, Eastern Zone of Survey of India, in the presence of Dr Ranbir Singh, Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board.

Under this MoU, the Survey of India will assist the Brahmaputra Board in various survey activities, including aerial and topographic surveys, installation of Great Trigonometrical Survey (GTS) benchmarks, and high-resolution mapping using modern techniques such as UAVs, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). Both parties also agreed to share spatial datasets and jointly use the Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) network to ensure standardised, high-accuracy geospatial data.

Sources pointed out that the partnership between the Brahmaputra Board and the Survey of India will significantly enhance the scientific and technological capabilities for managing water resources and mitigating flood-related challenges in the ecologically sensitive Northeastern region. A key aspect of this collaboration will be the parallel sharing of data between the Brahmaputra Board and the Survey of India, directly contributing to optimised work planning for effective river basin management.

The MoU further outlines collaborative efforts for technical training and capacity building of Brahmaputra Board personnel, supported by the National Institute for Geo-Informatics Science and Technology (NIGST), Hyderabad.
