Guwahati: The budget session 2025 of the Assam Legislative Assembly is starting tomorrow. This is the last full-fledged budget session of the Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma-led state government. The session will continue until March 25, but the actual working days of the session will be 14 days.
For the first time in Assam’s history, one day of the Assembly session will be held outside Dispur and in Kokrajhar. The budget session will start tomorrow at 12 noon with the address by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. Most of the officials of the Assembly secretariat are camping in Kokrajhar to prepare for the slated session day.
A discussion titled “Socio-Economic and All-Round Development of Sixth Schedule Areas of Assam” will be organised under the Speaker’s initiative and will be held tomorrow.
State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will table the Supplementary Demands for Grants and Supplementary Appropriation for FY 2024-25. This means the supplementary budget for the current financial year.
During the first day of the session, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will lay in the Assembly two reports of the One-Man Inquiry Commission headed by Justice (Retd.) BK Sharma of Gauhati High Court on the allegations and malpractices in the conduct of competitive examinations (CCE 2013 and CCE 2014) of the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC).
MLAs will travel to Kokrajhar by bus from the Assembly premises in Dispur tomorrow morning.
The remaining days of the budget session will be held in the state Assembly in Dispur. The first session in the Assembly at Dispur will be held in the morning of February 19. The state’s annual budget for the financial year 2025-26 will be tabled by the finance minister on March 10.
Several bills are scheduled to be tabled in the Assembly during the session. Notable among them are the Assam Right to Public Services (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Assam Panchayat (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Assam Education (Provincialisation of Services of Teachers and Re-organisation of Educational Institutions) (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025.
