GUWAHATI: Even after the COVID-19 has so far taken 323 lives, a section of people in the State are seem to be playing with the virus by not wearing masks and social distancing. For these people COVID-19 is not such serious health issue as being projected by the government and media.

The first COVID-19 casualty was reported in the State on April 22. Within four months the figure has crossed 300 and conditions of many of the positive patients are extremely critical going by the present callous attitude of a section of people doctors feel that there will further sharp rise of casualties.

Till Thursday 1.15 lakh people have been tested positive. The positivity rate in Guwahati city went upto 14 per cent from 12 per cent on Wednesday. Altogether 924 people in the city tested positive on Wednesday. The overall positivity rate in the State is 7.44 per cent.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the COVID situation is extremely alarming and the government is exploring various measures how to contain the virus spread. "Since the Centre has adopted a principle of unlocking the country for the sake reviving the economoywe now cannot think of imposing fresh lockdown in the State. We have to think of other alternatives," Sarma said.
