Guwahati: The city's residents as well as travellers to Guwahati will finally heave a sigh of relief as the Downtown-Rukminigaon flyover is set to open for the public on July 6, 2025. The firm entrusted with construction of the flyover, under the guidance of the Assam PWD, is putting the finishing touches on this long-awaited flyover.

This is one of the crucial flyovers of the city, as it will cross over the stretch of GS Road passing through the Rukminigaon point, which gets flooded every time it rains in the area. Let alone vehicles; even pedestrians have a hard time traversing the area whenever there is artificial flooding. Traffic congestion has been a daily headache during the construction period. Once the flyover is opened to traffic, it will be a smooth ride for commuters and travellers right from the Supermarket flyover and past the Downtown Hospital point to the approach of the Six-Mile flyover.

Regarding the inauguration of the flyover, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on social media, "To address Guwahati's traffic congestion issues, our government has already constructed several flyovers, significantly easing the city's long-standing problem. I am pleased to inform you that we had approved the construction of another flyover at Downtown on GS Road in the city. This flyover has now been completed ahead of schedule and in an impressive manner. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the hard-working labourers who have successfully built this structure. The Downtown flyover will be inaugurated for public use on July 6. This marks yet another tangible reflection of our commitment to serve the people."

Talking to The Sentinel, Executive Engineer of Dispur-Dimoria Territorial Road Division of Assam PWD, Munindra Chandra Deka, said, "The length of the flyover is 650 metres. The construction work was awarded to local Assamese contractor Anil Das. The award cost of the four-lane flyover is around Rs 85 crore. Work started in the last part of September 2024. We had set a completion target of 18 months, but the work was completed in a time period of only 9 months. There will be parking facilities beneath the flyover and streetlights on top. The construction work is almost complete, and the finishing touches are being put to it."
