Gwalior: The Gwalior Police have initiated a large-scale verification drive targeting residents from Assam and West Bengal living in the city, amid suspicions that several individuals may have submitted false addresses to settle in the region.

According to police officials, dedicated teams have been deployed to various districts in Assam and West Bengal to cross-check the permanent addresses provided by these residents during registration and official procedures. The move comes in light of increasing concerns over potential misuse of identity and residence documents. “This is part of a preventive security exercise. If discrepancies are found in the submitted address details, strict legal action will follow,” said a senior police officer from Gwalior.

The police have not specified the total number of people under scrutiny but confirmed that the operation is aimed at verifying the authenticity of address claims made by a specific group of migrant workers and residents from the two eastern states. In a related development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently revealed that eight illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators were sent back across the international border by police in South Salmara Mankachar district. Over 350 suspected infiltrators have been expelled from Assam so far, he said.

Additionally, the Assam government has conducted several eviction drives to remove illegal settlers from government and forest lands. Over 1.29 lakh bighas of land have been reclaimed as part of this campaign.
