GUWAHATI: The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) today declared the results of the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam, 2023. Candidates from rural areas and private educational institutions performed well in this year’s exam.

The overall pass percentage this year is 72.69% – the second highest since 1992. Last year, the pass percentage was only 56.49%. A total of 4,15,324 candidates appeared for the exam, out of which a total of 3,01,880 students passed the exam. A total of 94,913 students secured first division; 1,48,573 secured second division; and 58,394 students passed in third division.

Boys performed better than girls this year. The pass percentage for boys was recorded at 74.71% while the pass percentage for girls was 70.96%. Out of the total 1,90,765 boys who appeared in the HSLC exam, 1,52,524 passed and out of the total of 2,28,140 girls who appeared in the exam, 1,59,356 passed.

A total of 61 candidates secured top 10 positions. Hridam Thakuria of Sankardev Sishu Niketan, Dhekiajuli topped the HSLC exam, 2023 by scoring 596 marks out of 600. The second position was shared by four candidates – Ishrat Fariha of Renaissance Senior Secondary School; Lucky Devi Choudhury and Manmita Sarma of Ananda Bidya Niketan, Nalbari; and Aditya Anupam Konwar of St. Joseph’s School, Sonari. All four scored 593 marks out of 600. The third position was shared by three candidates – Nilufar Rahman of Dumunichowki English School, Darrang; Anindita Borah of Adarsha Vidyapeeth, Golaghat; and Mriganka Bhattacharyya of Sankardev Sishu Niketan, Baharbhat. All three scored 592 marks.

This year, Chirang district recorded the highest pass percentage of 88.68%. Goalpara district has the lowest pass percentage of 59.80%. Nalbari district has the highest number of rank holders – eight, followed by Barpeta and Kamrup (metro) districts with seven and six rank holders respectively.

The HSLC exam this year was held from March 3 to April 1, 2023. The General Science and Assamese subject question papers had leaked this time, and SEBA had to cancel both examinations and conduct the two examinations on later dates.

Second rank holder Ishrat Fariha, while talking to media persons, said that she wanted to study medical science in future. She is the daughter of Hifjur Rahman, a teacher, and Hasina Jahan of Juria who currently live in a rented house in Nagaon Christianpatty.
