GUWAHATI: Even though the second wave of Covid-19 has hit everyone in the State irrespective of age, the casualty due to the virus infection has been found very high among individuals in the age group of 40 to 60 years.

A senior doctor at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) said the number of relatively young people succumbing to the virus infection is far more than the elderly individuals in the second wave of the Covid-19 in the State.

"One of the prime reasons for such development is that many young people are casual in adhering to Covid-19 safety protocols. Individuals in the age group of 40 to 60 years mostly remain outside their homes for various purposes. So their chance of catching the virus is more than the elderly individuals who generally remain at home. Early vaccination of elderly persons might have saved them from infection in the second wave of Covid," the doctor said.

Sources in the Health Department said analysis has found that the highest deaths are from the 45-60 years category. The lowest number of death cases has been found in the age group of 60 to 70 years.

"Many Covid-infected individuals in the age group of 40 to 60 years have serious comorbidities such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Analysis has found that many young and relatively young people who succumbed to Covid infection were casual to treat their comorbidities in the past. It has been found that many who regularly do physical exercise, yoga, meditation are capable of overcoming Covid-19 more easily than those who follow a sedentary lifestyle," a doctor at Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh said. He advised that the people suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, heart, liver and kidney ailments must be extra careful. "Blood pressure and diabetes must be kept under control," the doctor said.

Principal of GMCH Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya when contacted told The Sentinel that besides late hospitalization of serious patients existence of comorbidities in Covid-infected people is another prime cause of the high rate of deaths.
