‘Home Minister asked Sarbananda Sonowal to receive report on Clause-VI panel’

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: “Union Home Minister Amit Shah has urged Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to receive the report of the High-Level Committee on Clause-VI of the Assam Accord and send it to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The Chief Minister is going to receive the report from the high-level committee on February 25, 2020 in the presence of all the Cabinet ministers of the State.”

Disclosing this before the media here on Saturday, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma virtually put an end to all speculations regarding the submission of the report of the high-level committee.

Sarma further said, “The Chief Minister will send the report to the MHA as soon as he receives it. After studying the report, if the MHA feels it necessary, it may have a discussion with the members of the committee. Such reports generally do have legal and Constitutional issues which the MHA has to sort out, and that’s a time-consuming exercise. Hence, implementation of the suggestions and recommendations given in the report will take time.”

On the content of the report, Sarma said, “We’re in dark as to what suggestions and recommendations the committee has given to the MHA on Clause-VI of the Assam Accord. The Committee just informed us on February 18, 2020 that it had completed the report on February 10, 2020. On February 20, 2020 when Union Home Minister Amit Shah came to the Northeast, we had a discussion with him on the report of the high-level committee. He then urged the Chief Minister to receive the report and send it to the MHA.”
