Property tax is charged by civic bodies. Rates of property tax are fixed by civic bodies in their respective areas. In case of a property coming under the tax regime for the first time, the holder of the property has to apply before his/her civic body for assessment. Civic bodies authorize assistant assessment officers to assess property tax after field visits and subsequently issue assessment certificates, stipulating rates of property tax. Property tax can be paid quarterly or annually to civic body offices. In Guwahati, property tax is paid in GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation).
