Immediately file cases against errant officials & firm: AASU

GUWAHATI: "Cases must be immediately filed against the OIL officials and the private organization responsible for the Baghjan blast in Tinsukia district and the irresponsible private firm blacklisted," demanded AASU here on Wednesday. It also demanded "long-term compensations to the affected people of the affected area".

Talking to The Sentinel, AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, "The explosion at Baghjan on Tuesday happened because of the inefficiency of Oil India Limited (OIL), Gujarat-based outsourcing company — M/s John Energy, the Government of India, and also the Government of Assam."

Posing, "Why did they wait for 14 days after the gas blowout to bring in experts?" the AASU leader said, "The Central government should have taken the initiative right at the beginning in this regard especially because India has diplomatic ties with the countries that have expertise in such fields. By the time experts from Singapore were brought, it was already too late; and that's why the explosion took place."

He further said, "The OIL authorities failed to put in place all its safety measures. Moreover, the OIL must carry out a review of the measures they generally resort to during such accidents."

The AASU leader alleged, "A number of outsourcing private firms including the Gujarat-based outsourcing company — M/s John Energy — are not experienced in the sector of oil exploration.

"There must be a review of all private firms registered with OIL particularly in the field of exploration; and M/s John Energy and such other private companies be immediately blacklisted."
