Imparting justice is the job of executive machinery: NHRC chief

GUWAHATI: NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) chairman Justice Arun Kumar Mishra believes that imparting justice is the job of the executive machinery, and the court comes into the picture when grievous violations take place.

A camp sitting-cum-open public for hearing cases of human rights violations began in Guwahati today. It will continue for two days. Inaugurating the camp, Justice Mishra underlined the government's role in defending human rights in all spheres of society. "It is the supreme duty of the executive officers who are in administration to protect and uplift human rights and values."

Pointing at the police, Justice Mishra said, "You are the protectors of the public. Never neglect your duty, and shouldn't indulge in criminal practice."

The NHRC will hear 31 cases relating to human rights violations of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Sikkim during the two-day sitting. Twenty-one of the 31 human rights violation cases or grievances are in Assam, mostly in police and health departments. The police and other officials concerned, besides the victims or their kin, were present at the hearing.

NHRC secretary-general Bimbadhar Pradhan said, "The NHRC is holding this camp sitting for quick disposal of human rights cases at the doorstep of the complainants, besides creating awareness among all stakeholders. A strong partnership among the NHRC, the governments, civil society, media etc., can only promote and protect human rights."

State Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua said, "Human rights are the basic rights that do not see who the persons involved are. The social security schemes are related to human rights. It is why the State government implements such schemes wholeheartedly."

NHRC members Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar and Justice Rajiv Jain, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Assam Human Rights Commission chairperson T Vaiphei and senior police and civil officers from the five north-eastern states were present at the camp.
