SILCHAR: Indian Air Force airlifted around 200 passengers from Ditekcherra in the Dima Hasao district, where a Guwahati-bound passenger train from Silchar remained stranded on Saturday morning.

Massive landslides played havoc on passengers travelling by trains in hill sections and buses and cars on the Jowai-Badarpur road. A special train from Badarpur successfully evacuated more than one thousand passengers from Ditekchrra in the Dima Hasao district on Sunday. Sources from the spot said that around 200 passengers started walking towards the New Harangajao station. NF Railway sources said that these passengers would be airlifted.

The condition of the Jowai-Badarpur was critical due to massive landslides in at least 14 places between Ratacherra and Sonapur. Thousands of passengers were stranded there without food and drinking water. Former MLA Rumi Nath was travelling by a car from Silchar to Guwahati and got stuck between Ratacherra and Sonapur.

Meanwhile, the Srikona Battalion of Assam Rifles launched flood rescue operations in the general area of Balichara and Borkhola in Cachar. Swift and coordinated actions were carried out to rescue people caught in the areas inundated by the River Jatinga.
