GUWAHATI: Japan Ambassador to India, Satoshi Suzuki has said that Japanese businessmen need to know Assam more before planning to invest in the State.

Addressing a press conference at the premises of 'Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra' here on Monday, Suzuki said that Japan has already made investments in some States in India. Pointing out that Japan is keen to develop futuristic relationship with Assam, he added that his visit to Guwahati is part of that mission.

Responding to a question on Japan's possible future investments in Assam, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar stated that there is a need to create an enabling environment by ensuring better connectivity and other infrastructures.

Earlier speaking at an event on 'India-Japan collaboration', Suzuki said that his country is also eager to deepen ties with Assam. "Assam is famous for its cocoon, muga silk, and tea among others," said Suzuki, adding that the two geographical entities can work to boost the mutual interests of both," the Japan Envoy said.

Stating that the economic development of Assam and the North East is crucial for India to become 5-trillion dollar economy, Suzuki said that there are several areas where both Japan and Assam can collaborate for mutual benefits. Speaking on the proposed Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge, Suzuki said that his country is pleased to be associated with the project as much as with other projects related to drinking water and sewerage in Guwahati. The envoy also said that Japan is looking forward to partner with Assam and train its human resources to enable them to create job opportunities in Japan.
