Jayanta Malla Baruah, Nandita Garlosa new faces in Assam Cabinet

CHANGES IN PORTFOLIOS ON THE CARDS

GUWAHATI: The new faces in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's Cabinet will be Haflong MLA Nandita Garlosa and Nalbari MLA Jayanta Mallahbaruah. While Nandita Garlosa is a first time MLA, Jayanta Malla Baruah made it to the State Assembly for the second time. He won in 2011 and 2021. Nandita will be the first lady minister in the State Cabinet from Dima Hasao.

On the eve of the first Cabinet expansion, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government renamed a few departments.

According to official sources, the Government replaced the Social Welfare Department by creating two new departments – The Women and Children's Welfare and Social Justice Empowerment. The Government also renamed the WPT & BC (Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes) Department as Tribal Affairs Department (Plain).

Official sources further said that the Cabinet expansion might witness changes in some portfolios. A press release (167/2022) from the DIPR confirmed the names of the new faces to be in the Cabinet.
