The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Justice Rashmin Manharbhai Chhaya as the new Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the name of Justice Rashmin Manharbhai Chhaya as the new Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. Presently, Justice Chhaya is serving as a Judge of the Gujarat High Court. Consequent to the elevation of Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia as a Judge of the Supreme Court, the post of Gauhati High Court fell vacant. Presently, Justice N Kotiswar Singh is serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

Justice Chhaya was born on January 12, 1961 at Veraval, district Junagadh. He passed B.Com Examination from MS University, Vadodara in the year 1981. He did Law at Sir L.A.Shah College from Gujarat University and passed out Third L.L.B. (Special) Examination in the year 1984. He enrolled as an advocate with Bar Council of Gujarat in the year 1984.

He was appointed as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor in the High Court of Gujarat in 1991 and worked till March 1995. Thereafter, he joined office of Senior Advocate ND Nanavaty and worked with him till 1998.

He was empanelled advocate for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Rajkot Municipal Corporation, Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation, Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation, Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services, and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, and Bhuj Urban Development Authority.

He was appointed as an Additional Counsel for the Department of Income Tax for two years in the year 2001. He was appointed as an Additional Central Government Counsel in July 2004 and thereafter appointed as Senior Counsel for the Union of India since 2008. He was also appointed as Senior Counsel for the Central Excise and Customs Department in the High Court of Gujarat. He appeared in various constitutional matters as well as town planning and land acquisition matters. He was elevated as an Additional Judge, High Court of Gujarat on February 17, 2011, and was confirmed as permanent Judge on 28.01.2013.
