Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to Raise Own Police Force

GUWAHATI: The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) is now going to raise its own police force. The Council will introduce a bill to this effect in its 247th session.

The State Government will impart arms and other training, besides providing arms to the KAAC police force. However, the KAAC will be the appointing authority. The Council will deploy these personnel in its boundary areas to check infiltration, ensure the security of areas rich in mines and minerals, etc. In the first batch, the Council will recruit over 200 candidates in the ranks of inspectors, sub-inspectors, and constables.

When Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council got Sixth Schedule status in 1952, Paragraph 3 (Subparagraph f) of the Constitution of India entitled the autonomous council to raise its own police force for its towns and villages. However, over the years, neither of those at the helm of affairs executed it.

According to KAAC sources, they are hopeful of getting full support from Dispur in this regard. People policing in Karbi Anglong have some sort of problem arising out of the local language, hilly terrain, topography, etc. If the local youth of the hill district get an appointment as police personnel, they will have an edge over such hostile issues.
