GUWAHATI: The three-day 400th birth anniversary programme of legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi will showcase the traditional Tai Ahom culture at the national and international levels. The programme, beginning tomorrow, will conclude on November 25, 2022.

It is for the first time the State Government is showcasing the traditional Tai Ahom culture, including maidams (tumulus of royalty and aristocracy) of medieval Ahom, at the national capital.

State Revenue and Disaster Management (R&DM) Minister Jogen Mohan, an Ahom, is looking after the preparations for the grand extravaganza on behalf of the seven-member committee for the traditional portrayal of the Ahom culture.

Talking to The Sentinel, Minister Jogen Mohan said, "It is for the first time the State government is going to showcase the traditional Ahom culture, including Bon Phi Puja (seeking blessings from forefathers), at the national and international levels. Ahom priests (pundits) perform this puja in the Tai language by using hens or eggs. We will use eggs in this event. We will portray the maidam parv (funeral activities) during the three-day event."

On Choklung Bia (marriage), the Minister said, "The Tai Ahoms light 101 flames and bless the bride and groom for their happy conjugal life in this marriage. We will showcase the Ahom marriage at this event. The groom has to hold the traditional Tai Hengdang (machete) in Choklung Bia."

On traditional Ahom prayer, Ai Sing Lao, the Minister said, "The Ahoms sing this prayer in the Tai language. Some Ahom girls from Assam will sing this prayer."
